The highlight of the first Xiju Opera Day-themed event, the classic Xiju Opera show The Pearl Pagoda, was staged at the Wuxi Grand Theatre in Jiangsu province on June 8.

Since its adaptation and stage debut, this opera has been performed for 60 years. It holds a special place in the hearts of generations of Xiju Opera artists and is favored by audiences.

The Pearl Pagoda tells the story of Fang Qing, who, after his family falls into poverty, seeks help from his uncle and aunt and suffers humiliation from his aunt in return. But he receives a Pearl Pagoda from his cousin, who had grown up with him, and a marriage promise from his uncle. Later, after becoming the top scholar, he disguises himself to test his aunt, who eventually welcomes him to her knees as she promised.

The stage depicted the gardens and pavilions of Jiangnan water towns, with elegant, exquisite sets and props. The familiar singing style immediately transported the audience into the story.

Throughout the performance, applause and cheers erupted continuously. Whenever a classic aria was sung or a brilliant stage movement was displayed, the audience responded with enthusiastic applause.

"It's so beautiful! This is the true sound of Wuxi!" said an excited veteran opera fan after the performance. A young audience member said, "I used to think opera was distant from me, but after watching the show today, I realized how beautiful and moving Xiju Opera can be."

Xiju Opera, as a representative opera form of Jiangsu province, was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008. It is characterized by the soft Wu dialect vocals, lyrical melodies, delicate performance art, and Jiangnan silk and bamboo accompaniment.
