Covering 2.94 square kilometers, the relics used to be the capital city of Wu, a state during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) when Helyu was king. The Helyu Relics Park now includes the historical site, a museum, an education base, as well as an office of the Institute of Archaeology of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
In May 2009, the Wuxi municipal government set up an administrative committee to protect and study the relics.
