What happens when Chinese instruments meet African drums

A pingtan performance tour staged by artists from Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu province, recently wrapped up in Abuja, Nigeria, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, according to local media outlets.
The performance tour was organized by the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, the China Cultural Center in Tanzania, the Network of International Culturalink Entities, and the Wuxi Pingtan Troupe.
On May 11, performers from the Wuxi Pingtan Troupe put on a show at the China Cultural Center in Abuja, capital of Nigeria, drawing over 200 spectators, including representatives from various diplomatic missions in Nigeria and cultural and art institutions.
The event showcased the rich diversity of Chinese culture, allowing locals to appreciate the gentle, elegant, and subtle beauty of the East through pingtan performances and the 3,000-year-old Wu dialect.
A Wu dialect class was also arranged, featuring professional lectures on both the Wu dialect and pingtan singing techniques, along with interactive sessions specially designed for international guests.

On May 15, Chinese and African artists engaged in deep exchanges at the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania. Pingtan performers taught their African counterparts to sing while playing the fan, while Tanzanian drummers provided improvised accompaniment to a traditional Chinese song.
