Xiaolou Lane Historical and Cultural Block in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, has recently received national recognition for its outstanding efforts in preserving and making use of its historical and cultural sites.

Xiaolou Lane, rich in history, has housed the esteemed Tan and Qin families since the Song Dynasty (960-1279). It features a wealth of architectural heritage from the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), including notable sites like the Tan Ancestral Hall, Fushou Hall, and Yiyuan Garden.

The block's comprehensive and proactive preservation strategies played a vital role in gaining recognition. Restoration work has involved using traditional materials to accurately replicate historical paving styles, while six ancient wells have been restored, bringing back the feel of old city life. Protecting ancient and renowned trees goes beyond just caring for them; it also includes optimizing courtyard layouts to improve ventilation and drainage, helping to sustain their health.

Xiaolou Lane has become a lively cultural center, blending local history with modern style and entertainment. Historical buildings have been transformed into stylish cafes, creative craft shops, independent bookstores, and trendy living spaces.

As visitors walk through Xiaolou Lane, they step on cobblestone streets that reflect 1,000 years of history, with white walls and black tiles telling stories of cultural continuity. This striking mix of past and present makes Xiaolou Lane an appealing destination for anyone interested in culture and history.
